Polled cattle are easier to handle, have better eye appeal for shows and result in better marketing, but the dehorning process can be painful for the animal. At Santa Ana Ranch, our Beefmaster cattle are genetically selected for polledness to avoid causing pain to the animals. Horns are inherited as an autosomal recessive gene. Because polledness is the dominant gene, a producer can take a herd of horned cattle and breed them with a red, polled Beefmaster bull from Santa Ana Ranch and have an entire polled calf crop in one breeding season.
